Living Water

We ( Tyler, Mike, and Pastor Martin) started off stepping into the knee deep water to find a safe route for the remaining team members and locals at the church. We began walking through the standing water until we arrived at the path with a very strong current. As we stepped into the current we all held onto one another and took one step at a time upstream towards the road. We had to walk slowly because of the uneven terrain and pending darkness. We walked a little further until we came across many of the mud huts of some of the locals that attended the conference earlier that day. Walking further upstream, the current started to get stronger; we got to a point where we could see the road but then came across river rapids. The river rapids were too strong for us to attempt to cross, so we had to find an alternative way out. As we started to find an alternative we walked downstream which was a lot stronger than we expected. The combination of the strong current and uneven ground made both of us (Mike and Tyler) stumble, and when we recovered our footing, I (Tyler) had to tighten the straps of my bag so it wouldn’t drag in the water. As we continued we noticed a mud hut that was falling apart and slanted from the strength of the current (before we had seen this house standing up normally). After we passed the house we reached the rapids which we had seen before. At that point there was no turning back, but we could finally see the road and headlights of Dessie’s (Christ Hope Staff) Land Rover. We decided if we held on tight and walked slowly, we could make it across the the rushing river. As we started making our way slowly but surely across, a man from the road yelled to us to come towards him. When I (Pastor Martin) heard the man yell in kiswahili, to come, I trusted him and took a step towards his voice. The first step for all of us was where it all went wrong.

Tyler- When we first slipped my first reaction was to try and stop. I was floating on my backpack which kept me above water. The only thing I was holding onto was Mike’s purple sweatshirt, which was the only way he was breathing and staying above the water. I was floating feet first, until my left leg bent back and caught on a rock which stopped the three of us from being carried further down the river. Me and Pastor Martin finally got our footing and stood up holding on to Mike who still couldn’t get his footing. At that point I yelled to Pastor Martin to stop and just stand. As we stood in the middle of the rapids, we all were crying out in prayer for the LORD to still the waters for us to reach the median of trees twenty feet away. At that point I threw off my backpack that had money, phones, ipods, speakers, visas and drivers license in it because it was just extra weight. After a few moments there was about a five to eight second time period where the water in front of us became still and calm. At that point we realized that GOD was working a miracle in the water as we reached the tree line safely.

Mike- When my feet gave away, I got sucked under immediately, tossing and turning like you would read in a book, or see in a movie. What went through my mind was “stay calm and just go with the flow.” I don’t know how, but somehow I let go of Pastor and Tyler, to whom I owe my life. When Tyler lifted me up, I tried to get some air, as I didn’t have a lot when I first went under. The current pulled me under again and I had almost no air, What was going through my mind at this point was, “Why now? I had so much to live for, so much I hadn’t accomplished. How is everyone going to react, how will my parents react?” At this point I really thought I was going to drown because I was thrown underneath Pastor and Tyler. After a few seconds Tyler and Pastor caught the ground and were able to hold onto me. I couldn’t grab my footing for a bit, but after awhile of struggling I was able to get hold and stand. At that point we were able to get to safety after we called out to God and asked him to calm the waters, after that, the water was calmer than before. Slowly by slowly we got to a line of trees where we were safe, at last. I still can’t fathom the power of God has.

Martin- This is the day I will never forget in my life! We started off nicely to find shallow way to lead the team towards the road because the Land Cruiser.could not come where we were, I am sorry! And sorry !! for what my African man did to us giving us the wrong direction and there we were all in the river.!. Both me and Tyler know how to swim but our friend did not know how to swim, the river was flowing very fast I tried all I could but it could not work our brother was under the water and we were above the water and I did not know how to serve a person life’s under the water though I know how to swim ,but thanks be to God who through us out of the river and we find ourselves under a shallow water though Mike was very tired and help less ,we had to help him to stand. While we were still strangling in the river many things came in my mind!
1.God do not let this people to die in my hand 2.what will I tell their parents , our Africans and the Team? I told God let me die with Mike for I do not want to face my African and the American but another strong thought came in my mind , what about my Family and my wife what will they say? And at that point of strangle the Hans of the Lord came upon us and we were all thrown out of danger.

I will thank the Lord for the rest of my life, He is such a BIG God , so STRONG and MIGHTY that nothing our God can not do.

Let me remind the three of us that God love us and he want us to serve Him with our life and we have not accomplished task. He gave us life again so that we continue to serve Him.

After we got to safety, Pastor Martin went on his own across the next portion of fast running water to find Dessie. As we waited there, I (Mike) threw off my sweatshirt because it was too heavy with all the water being soaked in it. After awhile, Pastor came back to get us and bring us to Dessies Land Cruiser. We made it back home safely and debriefed that night. One of the things we found out is that everyone who was back at the house shared the scripture Psalm 23: 2 and 4.

The next morning Dessie went and tried to find the backpack. As soon as he asked a guy saw someone with a backpack and documents in his hand. So Dessie went out with the guy he asked and got the backpack. We received everything except for one cell phone and Tyler’s necklace from Brazil. Everything that got completely wet. All of the electronics work perfectly now. We all thank God for everything that he has done, how he protected us. And how he was with us every step of the way.

Another day of rain in Kenya

Notebooks are a hit

Hello from Kenya! We were blessed with some more rain, we all know what happens when you add water to lots of dirt, mud! The children that came yesterday had so much fun, they invited their friends to join them.  Each day we see a small increase in the numbers, today it was 456 people.
The children are waiting for us every morning, willing and able to learn more from us.  Teenagers sitting in their chairs, notebook and pen ready in their hands to jot down quick little notes that they hopefully will carry throughout their life.
We found out today what happens when a crowd of young children want to have their candy.  The children decided that it was candy time, but the adults held the candy up and out of reach.  That did not stop them, they mobbed the person until the candy was passed to another adult.  The mob confined until the candy was on the ground for all to feast on.
Our goal here is to help them establish healthy relationships in their marriage, with their children and with God.  We have the privilege to work with a great team from Christ Hope, and with the various pastors that have been planning this event.  God has provided us with just the right amount of food everyday, for He is faithful.
Our days on this earth are numbered.  It is up to us to determine how we will live our life, but we must not forget, ultimately He is in control.  He is the one that we must seek for guidance, He is the one that we must face one day.  I hope that we can help bring more people to Him, for His glory,  here in Kenya.

80+ amazing African kids

Hungry for the word

Day one of 4-day family camp.  Six of us responsible for 80+ Kenyans from 6-13.  Remarkable event.  Attentive, respectful, quiet, responsive, enthusiastic, great singers, and really cute.  Imagine your kids, our kids, sitting under tent with birds and bugs and occasional cows about staying focused on teachings about 10 commandments, creation, how they are designed in God’s image, and their value.  Now imagine the scene where they are really interested, and quiet, and paying attention.  For hours.  All us sophisticated Americans were in awe.  God continues to show us that heading out of town to help the needy usually does far more to help the helpers.  And  their attitude of joy and hope was strong contrast to the amazing poverty that is their life.

Each child, and their teen siblings in another session and their parents in still another again amazed us when they really enjoyed time to write in the little notebooks we gave each of them (the cheapest paper notebooks- that were great treasures to them).  You never know.

The cooks fed 400 with no food left over.  Conference goers seemed to really enjoy and learn from what we taught.  And we continue to be in awe- going half way round the world to find people with the same “issues” as ours, plus a dozen we could not imagine.  And who come to a little pasture in a dirt-poor area of rural Kenya to find ways to improve their marriages and families.  It is good.  Exhausting, but good.

Preparations for the family camp

What a delight to play with the children

Registration - what a joy!

Tuesday, August 9, 2011

Greetings from Missy
Today was another awesome day here in Kisumu, Kenya. Most of us continued to tweak our lessons, practice skits and get our props together during the first half of the day. But the highlight was going to prepare for the family conference in Rumba. It was absolutely exhilarating to see where we will be ministering for the next four days. The members of Christ’s Hope staff, family conference committee and our team were all introduced to each other. We are one big, happy family working together, anticipating God moving marvelously. How wonderful to work with brothers and sisters in the Lord from the other side of the world! He has already given us a foretaste of what’s to come because registration for the conference has already exceeded expectations. The maximum number of adults was to be 100. There are already 169 adults and 147 children and teens registered. Many more will come tomorrow. How awesome is our God!!!
Everyone was very excited, playing with the children and visiting with the adults. When it was time to leave- all of the children gathered around our team hugging us. It was wonderful! In typical Kenyan style we got 15 people crowded into our little van that should seat 9 people. It was a great ride home and we all are eagerly anticipating tomorrow when family camp actually begins. Please pray for us!
Thank you, Jesus.

A day in Kisumu

How many people can fit into a tuk tuk?

Greetings from Naomi.  I am part of a 15 person team volunteering with Christ’s Hope in Kenya.  Our focus for this trip is putting together a Family conference using Christ Hope “Choose to Wait” materials to help stop the cycle of devastation caused by AIDS.  Although we have each spent several months preparing for the conference and we filled 15 large suitcases with supplies that came over with us, it was necessary to complete some of the tasks when we arrived in Kenya.  Today we needed to go to a local lumber yard to have wood cut to be made into easels for our lessons.  We had a piece of lumber that needed to be brought with us that was 4 foot by 8 foot.  Now we don’t have a vehicle to take the wood with us so we hailed a tuk-tuk. For those of you who don’t know what that is, and I just found out myself, it is a small vehicle comparable to a riding lawn mower that acts like a taxi.  We used rope to tie the board to the top, filled the back with bags of groceries for Care and Compassion patients and 7 of us piled in. There are no seat belts, windows or rules of the road.  The ride was an adventure.  We are all hanging on to whatever is appropriate at the moment to be safe and make sure the wood got there without falling off. The Kenyans are used to this form of transportation but they were laughing at us as we rode by.  We arrived at our destination with lots of stares but mission accomplished.  We left 3 of the guys from our team there to work out the details and I had the privilege of carrying out visits to the sick.

I was reminded of Psalms 72:12-14, “He will take care of the helpless and poor when they cry to Him; for they have no one else to defend them.  He feels pity for the weak and needy, and will rescue them.  He will save them from oppression and from violence, for their lives are precious to Him.”  Today I felt like the hands and feet of Christ by hugging and sharing with many weak and needy.  As we walked
from mud hut to mud hut, I met some amazing people.  People who are suffering like I have never suffered, and are in great need physically. They each joyfully welcomed us into their homes.  I had the opportunity to read scripture, pray and sing with each of them after we listened to their prayer requests.  Christ’s Hope provides bags of food which we gave to each family.  The highlight of my
day was to lead someone to Christ.  As we left that humble home, our translator said, “We leave you in the hands of God and that’s a very good place to be.”  As I contemplate the day, my new friends, the great needs, I pray for God to provide and I ask Him to use me in that plan. This is a very fulfilling and rewarding opportunity, pray for God to use you in His care of the needy around you.

Team arrival

Care Point visit

Wordless bracelets tell the story of what Christ has done

August 6, 2011

Hello Friends and Family from home – the team has safely arrived at our destination -Christ’s Hope in Kisumu, Kenya. We thank those back home for their prayers, financial support and their willingness to launch this team to answer God’s call. God’s provisions and His orchestrating all the details of this short term mission trip continue to be an incredible blessing to witness. We know God is not only at work through the team but also in the lives of each team member, as we anticipate this to be a life-changer for many of us.

God graciously answered the prayers for safe travel, and as we were on the multiple long flights to get to Africa, probably more than just one of us was thinking – “are we almost there?” During the trip we were aware of God’s presence, as we received a gift of our luggage being checked, free of charge all the way through to Kisumu, we had plenty of time to make our flight connections and the flights were for the most part quite smooth. We were also delighted to meet two other short term mission teams on our flights.

Upon arriving in Nairobi, very kind people picked us up late at night and were very gracious to help us in any way they could, including making us a snack pack of sandwiches, freshly hard boiled eggs and sweet bananas. Very early the next morning we were kindly transported back to the Nairobi airport for the last leg of our journey to Kisumu. In Kisumu we were met by Desmond and Tony from Christ’s Hope, who were most gracious to us and brought us directly to the Christ’s Hope compound and they had a yummy breakfast waiting for us. We are definitely eating well in Kenya.

On our first day in Kisumu we were able to minister to 48 children at 2 Orphan Care Points. We experienced God at work in our hearts as we looked into the eyes of those sweet children and as we played with them, sang songs together, taught them about God’s love and shared a meal with them. The squeals of joy and laughter echoed throughout the camps as God showed himself to these children as a loving father who cares for them very much.

We had some other ‘God at work moments’ when one of our translators was offered a back pack and she through tears said she had been praying for a new pack; one of our team members offered to give blood and Desmond told him he has a patient who is need of his blood type, and a new road we traveled was just opened that day, making for a mostly smooth ride to one of the Care Points. Another highlight of the first day in Kisumu was the praise and worship time the team shared with the Christ’s Hope team as we brought the first day to a close – God had given victory over so many challenges and fears team members had faced over the weeks prior to departing for the trip, and our hearts desire was to glorify God. Praise the one true God who has the power of salvation to the nations!!

Nothing

Hi my name is Laurina Van Sloten and I will be traveling to Kenya in August. Preparing for this trip has been a bit of a journey in itself. I remind myself of the reasons that I am going, not to bring glory to myself, but to hopefully inspire hope and love in the people there. I am most looking forward to the orphanages, hospitals, and jails. When a person is at the lowest point or has the least, it is then that the truth comes out. True emotions are seen much more clearly when there are not distractions of this life surrounding you. This is a poem I wrote and serves as a reminder that for me to be nothing is everything.

NOTHING
When all is lost I am found
When destruction comes, I come around
When Satan creates in me a thirst
For things of this world, and me at my worst
Jesus intervenes, in His sweet grace
And shows me a glimpse of his face
When I am nothing and fall to my knees
Left alone with my vain wishes and pleas
He throws back to me His word and His will
He draws me up to walk with Him still
He guides me along with His peace and His love
And I know He will watch me always from above
No matter where I am, in the world, or in my heart
My God, He will never be far apart
He makes me nothing, tears apart my plan
So I will learn to take hold of His hand
He takes my life, shows me who to be
So He can accomplish the most through me
When I am less, He is great
So make me dust, an admirable trait
If I am nothing and He is Great.
